Veterans Are Always on Call

Last week, the Iowa Hawkeyes sported a patriotic Tiger Hawk on their helmets to salute the military veterans in advance of today, Veterans Day, aka 11/11/11.  Great friend and sports director, Jesse Gavin, at KCNZ radio in Cedar Falls, offered an idea on Facebook.  I can’t recall exactly what he posted, but it did help get me to think a little more about what type of ideas that can be put in place so give veterans a little more than an one-day gesture that happens twice a year (Memorial Day and Veterans Day).

-The NFL gives permanent discounts on tickets to any game.

-Every national chain restaurant add a military discount each time a veteran dines at their place.  If Denny’s can offer a senior citizen a discount to eat at their chains, they could do the same for veterans.

-A business or sports league set aside profits from each game into an escrow to give to military organizations to provide for families, medical, mental, and other needs that veterans will need in the short term.

Those are just a few ideas, but the point Jesse, and a lot of people, wanted to make, if my interpretation is correct, is Veterans Day is everyday.  Not just on November 11th every year.  The U.S. military branches, Air Force, Army, Navy, Marines, Coast Guard, and National Guard, never takes a day off.  Law enforcement agencies and emergency/ambulance staffs never take a day off.

They’re on call everyday.
